According to the tech giant, the criteria they used was ranking apps and games that made life easier, healthier and helped people stay connected in a difficult period. Every year the world is faced with various challenges that developers have to address. As technology continues improving, the levels of innovation continue increasing and being more sophisticated.

Apps of the year

Wakeout! was announced as the iPhone app of the year. The app gives users 30-seconds tailored exercise tips. It has a library of over 1,000 searchable exercise movement exercises that users can use wherever they are. For example, one can filter search results on 30-second exercises you can do while gaming or gambling with this award-winning operator. Users can download the app and try it free for 7 days, after which they will be required to choose a subscription of either $5/month or $35/year. Five people can use the subscription without any additional costs. Zoom was the editor’s choice of the iPad app of the year. The video chatting app provided a platform in which families, friends, and colleagues could connect. The app witnessed a meteoric rise in the number of daily users from just 10 million in December, to more than 300milion by April. Disney Plus was named the Apple TV app of the year. Some of the family-friendly content it aired include The Mandalorian and Baby Yoda.

Genshin Impact was named as the best game for iPhone. This is an anime adventure action game and the first open-world game developed by miHoYo. Legends of Runetterra was named as the iPad game of the year. It is a card strategy game set in the world of League of Legends. The popularity of League of Legends seems to have been enough encouragement for Riot Games to come up with a card game. It has especially been received well for players who love card strategy games, and it is also free to play. However, players are required to pay to unlock chests from the Vault. Disco Elysium was named the game of the year for the Mac. It is an open-world role-playing game that involves the user taking the role of a detective solving a murder mystery. An expanded version of the game titled “The Final Cut’ is expected to be released next year. The editors chose Dandara Trials of Fear as the game of the year for Apple TV. It is a unique 2D action game where the protagonist Dandara can jump across walls, floors and ceilings to discover secrets and mysteries in her world which she is trying to save. Sneaky Sasquatch was named as the Apple Arcade game of the year. This is an adorable game that users take the role of a sneaky sasquatch wandering the colourful world as he steals picnic baskets and avoids being caught by rangers. The game is made in the style of the early ’90s games.

Most downloaded apps and games

While the editors had their picks based on the theme they developed, users also had their say with the apps they downloaded. Zoom was the most downloaded app by both iPad and iPhone users. TikTok and Disney Plus came up second and third respectively for iPhone, while Disney Plus and Youtube were 2nd and 3rd for iPad. For games, Among Us was the most downloaded free game for the iPhone and iPad, while the most downloaded paid games for both devices was Minecraft.
