A number of AI-powered features were announced with the newly released Samsung Galaxy S24 series, which represents a major advancement and shows how much Samsung is dedicated to innovation. However, many owners of the Samsung Galaxy S22, S22 Plus, and S22 Ultra were left confused as to why these Galaxy AI updates would not be coming to their under-two-year old devices anytime soon.
Samsung’s Head of Customer Experience, Patrick Chomet explained the approach of Samsung and the reason behind keeping the Galaxy S22 series out of the newest AI features.
Chomet explained the reason that including Galaxy AI features into the Galaxy S24 series required substantial effort and resources. TM Roh who is the President of Samsung’s mobile division initially aimed to announce Galaxy AI support for the Galaxy S23 devices during the recent Unpacked event. Chomet mentioned that the focus was on ensuring the quality and performance of the new features on the latest devices.
Samsung is careful about the approach that involves learning from user experiences with the Galaxy S24 series before extending support to other devices. Chomet highlighted the importance of understanding how customers use AI features especially in terms of the impact on device resources and cloud resources. The company aims to analyze the intensity of AI usage among average customers and tune performance accordingly.
Chomet outlined the specific devices that will benefit from Galaxy AI upgrades in coming months. The Galaxy S23, Galaxy Z Fold 5, Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Tab S9 are set to receive the advanced features with an expected rollout within the first half of the year. This selective approach allows Samsung to observe and evaluate the real world performance of Galaxy AI on these devices.
Acknowledging the shared Exynos 2200 chipset between the Samsung Galaxy S23 FE and the Samsung Galaxy S22, Chomet clarified that, for now, Galaxy AI support is limited to last-gen devices. The mention of for now leaves room for future considerations but the highlight on limiting it to specific devices suggests a strategic approach to prioritize newer models initially.
Even though the Galaxy S22 series may receive a One UI 6.1 upgrade it does not appear like Galaxy AI features will be added anytime soon. Chomet’s word choice using phrases like for now and step by step indicates that the business is moving forward cautiously and is concentrating mostly on its newest flagship models.
While Samsung users are disappointed that Galaxy S22 series wilt not be receiving the latest Galaxy AI upgrades in the near future but the commitment to ensure the quality and performance of these features is evident. As Samsung continues to observe and learn from user interactions with the Galaxy S24 series there may be possibilities for expanding Galaxy AI compatibility to other devices including the Galaxy S22 line in the future.
